This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Abelian Groups and Modules held at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland, from August 10 until August 14, 1998. The meeting brought together more than 50 researchers and graduate students from 14 countries around the world. In a series of eight invited survey talks, experts in the field presented several active areas of research, including: · Almost completely decomposable abelian groups, Butler groups and almost free groups - the classification problem, and invariants of special classes of torsion-free abelian groups. · Totally projective groups, their automorphism groups and their group rings - questions about unique passage between these categories. · Radicals commuting with products. · The Ziegler spectra of Neumann regular rings and the class (semi-) groups of Prüfer domains. · The Krull-Schmidt property for valuation domains. These main talks were accompanied by many other presentations of current research on abelian groups and modules. Methods from model theory, category theory, infinite combinatorics, representation theory, classical algebra and geometry were applied to the study of abelian groups and modules; conversely, results and methods from abelian group theory were applied to general module theory and non-commutative groups. All this is reflected in the 30 articles in this volume, which introduce the reader to an active and attractive part of algebra that over the years has gained much from its position at the crossroads of mathematics. Lively discussions at the conference influenced the final work on the presented papers, which convey some sense of the intellectual ferment they generated and stimulate the reader to consider and actively investigate the topics and problems contained therein.

Abelian Groups, Rings, Modules, and Homological Algebra by Pat Goeters, , available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide. The areas discussed include abelian groups and their endomorphism rings, modules over various rings, commutative and non-commutative ring theory, varieties of groups, and topological aspects of algebra. The book offers a comprehensive source for recent research in this active area of study.

Classical examples would be the cyclic groups or the Klein four-group. Working with abelian groups might lead to the feeling that there must be some sort of free part (i.e.) and some sort of torsion part (i.e. elements such that for some). One could then expect.

Generally, the multiplicative notation is the usual notation for groups, while the additive notation is the usual notation for modules and additive notation may also be used to emphasize that a particular group is abelian, whenever both abelian and non-abelian groups are considered, some notable exceptions being near-rings and partially ordered groups, where an operation is written.

Starting with examples of abelian groups, the treatment explores torsion groups, Zorn's lemma, divisible groups, pure subgroups, groups of bounded order, and direct sums of cyclic groups.

Subsequent chapters examine Ulm's theorem, modules and linear transformations, Banach spaces, valuation rings, torsion-free and complete modules, algebraic.

A $\mathbb{Z}$-module is the same thing as an abelian group. The class $\mathcal{K}$ that you've described certainly doesn't contain all of the abelian groups (for instance, it doesn't contain $\mathbb{Z}$), so the answer to the question from the edit is "no".

To some extent this attitude was justified as long as abelian group theory was largely the study of torsion modules, although even in Kaplansky's book it was not totally clear how to translate the proof of Ulm's Theorem, using Kaplanksy's back-and-forth method, into the.
